The answer is that before becoming an AI artist, the AI artist was already an artist or designer.

Studying art and sculpture at New York’s Alfred University, American artist Ken Kelleher was deeply inspired by the large-scale metal public sculptures of the 1930s New York School abstract expressionist David Smith. Nearly fanatical about sculpture creation, after becoming proficient with materials like wood and metal, he became active as a digital sculptor, serving as a digital art director for many brands and collaborating with architects, curators, galleries, museums, and designers.

The physical large-scale sculptures he created for brands and clients are spread across China, Russia, Indonesia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. For Ken Kelleher, the act of creation itself is a questioning of artistic value and the mysteries of the natural world. The sculptures he creates, whether physical or digital, must erase their practicality and be regarded as pure existences that stimulate viewers’ feelings, engage in dialogue with the audience, and lead them into deeper thought. “Poetry is essential. And of course, various other things, like expressing human thoughts and emotions through art and inspiring awe,” says Ken Kelleher.

Physical Sculpture by Ken Kelleher for Al Khaliji Bank Headquarters in Qatar

Form, material, light and shadow, plus scale, time, and space, traversing physical and virtual dimensions – Ken Kelleher’s most well-known series involves “invading” real public spaces with photorealistic digital sculptures. Loving all forms, colors, and textures, from geometric, minimalist, abstract, organic, fluid, natural, healing, to colorful, Ken Kelleher, a digital sculpture encyclopedia, has over 20 years of creative experience. Now, he also immerses himself in the universe of AI art under the pseudonym “Anchorball,” experimenting with AI software to explore new material textures. For him, all art forms are the same; they should be about exploring possibilities and pushing boundaries, then returning these innovations to people’s lives and life itself.

Ken Kelleher’s Work

Interview

As far as you can remember, what was the first massive sculpture or object that gave you a strong feeling?
I wouldn’t say it was an overwhelming feeling of massive scale, but I was completely inspired by the American abstract expressionist David Smith during my time at art school; it was incredible. When I experience creative breakthroughs in digital work, my pace accelerates, and when I contemplate the possibilities of creation, it’s all truly exhilarating.

Which sculptors have influenced you the most? How do you orchestrate the dialogue between them?
I typically visualize the sculpture before being inspired by an image of a space. The relationship between the sculpture and the space can vary depending on the situation. For instance, I might generate a space inspired by the architecture of Frank Gehry or Zaha Hadid, or add other objects because I’m struck by an amazing location. At this stage, I think I lean more towards creating both the sculpture and the space simultaneously.

For you, is a sculpture in a space more like an intervention or a complement? Do you attempt to express poetry through your sculpture creation?
Yes, poetry is essential. And of course, various other things, like expressing human thoughts and emotions through art and inspiring awe.

You raised a very interesting point: “If we strip away the practicality of an object, a series of objects, or certain forms, what remains?” This perspective seems valid for fine art as well. What, for you, is the meaning or value of art?
My view is that we live in a world that manufactures and sells objects, all centered around consumerism and daily use, not necessarily about provoking thought or reflection. The meaning of art is a good question; I believe the answer is different for everyone. For me, there’s a force driving me to create; not creating might drive me crazy. I believe art creates meaning. It inspires people to think. It happens within and beyond daily life. It pushes boundaries and leads us to new ways of thinking.

Ken Kelleher’s Work

Do you use AI software to create interior design, home decor, sculptures, or any form of art? To some extent, it has profoundly changed traditional creative methods, but those traditional methods remain necessary in many aspects; for instance, some skills have become even more important because of it. I see AI as a powerful tool for exploring new ideas and a way to break the limitations I face in exploring creativity.

In an interview, you mentioned, “For me, sculpture is a question about the depth and mysterious nature of things.” As a creator who constantly questions, what important questions do you think we must ask when engaging in AI art creation?
It’s really the same as with any art form: How do you push the boundaries?
